A Swimming Season

A Swimming Season

by Rosemary Frauenhofer

This season the onset of activity for the Highland Lake swim club was somewhat delayed by a rainy and cool June. Once the weather cleared, a steady cadre of swimmers met – often undaunted by rainy weather. After all, both rain and lake water are wet!

A small number of swimmers were able to attain a near-perfect record for the three weekly swim dates. In all, we swam regularly and with great pleasure and camaraderie. It was often said, “I wouldn’t have gone in the water today if it weren’t for the club.”

In early September, club members swam across first bay (shown below—Marlene Rouleau, Terry Platt, Pat Masucci, Sheryl Grant and Rosemary Frauenhofer) accompanied by our safety crew, Jack Rouleau and Donald Masucci, who herded us with their power boats. Those of us who made the swim vowed to extend our efforts to all three bays next summer. Time seemed to run out early this year – last year we swam across all three bays. This is especially remarkable since some swimmers prefer to swim with “noodles,” long, narrow flotation devices for unsure bathers. We are sure to begin the summer early next year, as we plan to relay the length of the lake as well as crossing the bays. New members are encouraged – all abilities are welcome. We truly have different levels and encourage a love of the water and the sport of swimming. Swim club has three meets per week, and attendance is absolutely optional. For those who would be daunted by thoughts of a marathon swim - you are welcome to choose a shorter route or ride in the boat part or all of the way. We support all members in their efforts. Those who would like to join (some of us were still swimming the last full week of September) can email rwfrauen@charter.net for information. If you are interested, we do get together for a few indoor activities during the “off-season.” Of course, you would be welcome to join us.
