f you ever lived in Burlington, you would know you were required by Burlington Municipal Code to display on your property an approved house address sign distributed by the Fire Department . Their code requires the sign must be visible from the street and placed in a conspicuous place on the property. The purpose of the sign is to allow the fire, police and emergency medical services to locate your residence in the case of an emergency.

One of the questions asked when you call “9-1-1” for assistance is: “What is your address?” Many addresses in Winchester require the caller to provide detailed information on how to find their driveway or access road in order for emergency responders to provide rapid assistance. A caller might respond we are on the east side of the lake and you should take the third driveway past the blue house and we’re the second brown house on the left.

The police, firemen and emergency medical technicians require clear house address signs to find you in case of an emergency. If an accident or a medical emergency occurs at night, how confident are you that first responders could find your house in time? Not having your house marked with highly visible numbers can delay 911 responders ten or more minutes! This delay could be the difference between life and death.

Unlike Burlington, Washington, we do not have a house address ordinance, but we do have a Dock and Mooring Ordinance (Sec. 162) that requires: “Reflectors shall be affixed to the ends of a dock.” In addition: “The street number of the property (in numerals at least 3 inches high) shall be affixed to the end of a dock so as to be visible from the watercourse.”
