On June 13, 2007, the HLWA purchased the Majewski property, consisting of 7.9 acres of undeveloped forestland on West Wakefield Boulevard, as a joint project with the Winchester Land Trust. The property was immediately turned over to the Land Trust so it could remain undisturbed.
The land was purchased through donations from HLWA members, other local residents, and from the State of Connecticut open-space grant program. The State provided $62,400 toward the purchase and the balance of nearly $45,000 from the local donors.
The property, which we have renamed Long Pond Ridge, also contains 350 feet of waterfront that has long been used as a prime fishing location.
Also on the property is an historic plaque commemorating Mr. Harvey Wakefield, who donated the funds to build Wakefield Boulevard in 1884.
The HLWA is erecting a bronze plaque next to the Harvey Wakefield plaque, commemorating the purchase of the property as well as fulfilling a requirement of the grant to indicate the State provided partial funds for the purchase. The picture below was taken as the plaque, weighing 80 lbs., was unloaded for storage until it can be installed. We plan to place it next to the Wakefield plaque this spring, as soon as the weather permits.
