They were “freezin for a reason” on February 2 when nearly 200 hearty souls of all ages jumped into frigid waters at Holland Beach near the State boat launch. The occasion for such outrageous behavior was the fifth annual Special Olympics Penguin Plunge. More than 1,500 spectators gathered to cheer on the brave Plungers who ran down a long grey carpet to the hole in the icy 33° water cut out by the Winsted Volunteer Fire Department earlier in the week. The ice was more than 12” thick.
Costumes were popular and creative. Most everyone arrived in some sort of getup to compete for the best costume award. Team Brave Heart, organized by Matt Smith (below, on right), an HLWA member from Long Island, New York, was this year’s winner.
Friends and neighbors living around the lake were very active participants in this popular event. HLWA members had a great time serving hot dogs, cocoa, cookies and even cold drinks to the enthusiastic crowd.
Jay Case, Director of Development for the Special Olympics northwest region and this year’s organizer, appreciated all the people who supported the event, which raised more than $90,000 to fund Special Olympics programs throughout the year.
