boat parade 2010

Boat Parade 2010

by member of the Boat Parade Judge Triumvirate, Nora Mocarski

It could have been a dark and stormy night for two reasons: one, the rain, and two, the task of deciding the first four winners of the 2010 Highland Lake boat parade. But alas! With a bit of creative energy, we managed to put off the first and celebrate the second. (Yes, we do claim credit for controlling the rain!)

There was much labor and pressure in coordinating both charges, but we found this year’s parade most enjoyable as judges. Shepherded along by the creative juices of Candy Perez, we escaped the dirty deed of having to select the top four boats. Instead, we worked with four new categories for 2010 - best decorated, most patriotic, most creative, and best theme.

It could not have been better. We passed the parade three times to carefully analyze each boat on their own merits. Finally, after much debate and deliberation on board the “judges barge,” we found our winners! Thanks in part to Dylan Thomson, the onboard debate moderator, prizes were awarded to well-deserving members of our community:

Best Decorated - Neal Group (pontoon fireboat, siren, lights, costumes, and atomic fireballs)
Most Patriotic - Blair Group (red boat with Lady Liberty, Lincoln, and Uncle Sam)
Most Creative - O'Connell Group (pontoon with lights, smoking volcano, costumes)
Best Theme - Janczak Group (small rowboat with Halloween theme)

Congratulations to all the families and friends for jumping on board and participating in the unique and enjoyable 2010 Highland Lake boat parade. This special event would not have been possible without you!
